Spumante Alta Langa DOCG Metodo Classico: the excellence of the Langhe in a bottle
What is Alta Langa DOCG?
A journey through history and terroir.
Alta Langa DOCG is not simply a designation: it is the highest expression of a winemaking tradition that brings together altitude, elegance, and time.
Born in the heart of Piedmont, among the highest hills of the
southwestern Langhe, Alta Langa identifies Metodo Classico sparkling wines made exclusively from
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, grown above 250 meters of altitude.
The DOCG is relatively recent, but its tradition has roots in the 19th century, when Piedmont began experimenting with secondary fermentation in the bottle. After decades of trials and vineyard selections in the most suitable sites, the
Alta Langa DOCG denomination was officially established in
2011.
Three pillars make it unique in the landscape of Italian sparkling wines:
- The terroir: calcareous-marl soils, breezy exposures, and strong diurnal temperature shifts that give verticality and structure.
- Time: the minimum aging is 30 months on the lees, and only a few producers – such as Podere Gagliassi – extend it up to 36 months.
- The method: strictly Metodo Classico, with bottle fermentation and remuage, for a sparkling wine of great finesse.
Choosing an Alta Langa DOCG means embracing precision, craftsmanship, and territorial identity, in a sip that tells the story of the most authentic Langhe.

Metodo Classico and grape varieties: how a sparkling wine of excellence is born
The strength of
Podere Gagliassi’s Alta Langa DOCG lies in its
absolute fidelity to the Metodo Classico, the very same method used for the world’s greatest sparkling wines.
What sets it apart, however, is its unmistakable
Piedmontese
signature – elegant yet bold – that emerges from every bottle.
Podere Gagliassi’s Alta Langa is born from
our single-body vineyards, organically certified, in the
heart of Monforte d’Alba, at around 460 meters above sea level.
An equal blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it is the result of agronomic and oenological choices that reflect our philosophy: to preserve the elegance of altitude and the minerality of the Langhe soils.
Production is intentionally limited to only 10,000 bottles per year, in order to guarantee quality, identity, and distinctiveness.
The winemaking process follows a rigorous path:
- Gentle pressing of the grapes to extract only the free-run juice
- Fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperature
- Blending of the cuvée, secondary fermentation, and bottle refermentation
- Aging on the lees for at least 36 months, with manual remuage
Every bottle of Podere Gagliassi’s Alta Langa DOCG is a
time capsule, capable of telling the story of
years of work in the vineyard, patience in the cellar, and a clear production vision.

Alta Langa and Its Expressions: Brut, Pas Dosé, and Beyond
Alta Langa DOCG is expressed in different styles, thanks to the management of sugar dosage after disgorging:
Alta Langa Pas Dosé
“Pas Dosé” means that no liqueur d’expédition (i.e., no sugar) is added at disgorgement, making it the driest dosage level. This style has an essential and direct profile, highlighting the wine’s acidity and verticality, often resulting in a more austere and less immediately approachable character.
Alta Langa Extra Brut
The most authentic and refined expression of Piedmontese bubbles: elegant, harmonious, and full of personality.
Podere Gagliassi’s Alta Langa Extra Brut rests for
36 months on the lees, developing complexity, structure, and a vibrant freshness that make it ideal for fine cuisine and celebratory moments. A Metodo Classico with character, able to combine tradition and
modernity with style.
Alta Langa Brut
The
classic expression of Alta Langa, with a balanced and approachable profile.
The Brut version is characterized by a slightly higher dosage, giving it softness and immediate drinkability. Pleasant and versatile, it is the most traditional choice for those new to this Metodo Classico.

The DOCG was officially recognized in 2011, but it is based on an old tradition of bottle fermentation dating back to the 19th century.
Is Alta Langa DOCG always vintage-dated?
