Wine Identity

  • Origin and territory

Podere Gagliassi's Barolo MGA "Badarina" is grown south of the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most iconic and renowned areas for Barolo production. The vineyards extend across marly, calcareous soils, rich in minerals and gravel, with south/southeast exposures and altitudes above 390 meters.

This dry, breezy microclimate with significant temperature variations favors the slow and complete maturation of the Nebbiolo, giving the wine tension, depth, structure and extraordinary longevity.

  • What do the acronyms MGA and DOCG mean?

The name “Barolo MGA Badarina – DOCG” contains two fundamental acronyms:

     - DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin)

It is the highest Italian certification for a wine and guarantees:

    • origin from a delimited area (Barolo DOCG)
    • compliance with precise specifications: 100% Nebbiolo, low yield per hectare, minimum 38 months of refinement (18 in wood), controlled analytical and sensorial characteristics
    • organoleptic tests by official commissions

     - MGA (Additional Geographic Mention)

Introduced in 2010, it is the Italian equivalent of the concept of “Cru”.

It defines a very specific sub-zone within the denomination, with unique geological, historical and qualitative characteristics.

In our case, Badarina is a Serralunga d'Alba MGA, recognized for its ability to produce austere, vertical Barolos with an unmistakable personality.

Its mention on the label is optional, but Podere Gagliassi chooses to declare it to enhance transparency, identity, and territorial origin.

  • The “Badarina” cru

Badarina is among the most prestigious historic crus in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, located in the far southeast. The vineyards are located on compact calcareous marl, with excellent exposure and steep slopes.

    • These natural conditions generate a Barolo:
    • of great structure
    • with solid and dense tannins
    • lively and persistent acidity
    • marked mineral expression

Podere Gagliassi has been vinifying Badarina grapes since 2016, using an artisanal, selective, and organic approach. This approach favors limited production runs to offer a pure, distinctive wine that is true to its origins.

Technical data sheet

  • Grapes and harvest

    Grape variety: 100% Nebbiolo

    Harvest: manual, October

During the harvest, the bunches are selected one by one, picking only those with perfect sugar and phenolic ripeness. The late harvest allows for the grape's aromatic nuances to be enhanced without compromising its acidity.

  • Vinification and refinement

Fermentation and maceration in stainless steel

    Refinement:

    • French oak tonneaux
    • 12 months in bottle

This long journey allows the wine to stabilize naturally, evolve gracefully and develop aromatic depth and refined tannins.

  • Print run

Production: approximately 2,500 bottles per year

The limited edition reflects the winery's tailored approach, with extreme attention to every stage of production.

Tasting notes

  • Color and scent

To the eye it presents a deep, brilliant and transparent garnet red.

The nose is complex and layered: dried rose petals, cinnamon, black pepper, black tea and ripe red fruits blend with leather, licorice, tobacco, undergrowth and a fresh balsamic note.

  • Taste and structure

On the palate, it is broad, austere, and upright. The tannins are smooth yet firm, fully evolving.

The acidity provides a lively finish and a long finish. The finish is savory, spicy, and earthy, with a clear territorial identity.
